Meet the RC Staff- Jonathon Anderson

Jonathon Anderson is an HPC Engineer, Sr., focusing on system administration. He lives in Erie with his wife, Andi, and two children, Leo and Miles. Before moving to Colorado last year, he worked for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York; the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago.

At CU Boulder, Anderson builds, administers and maintains the high-performance computing resource. He is particularly tasked with working with users and hardware vendors to design computer, network and storage resources. His most exciting experience with this job has been his involvement with the process of procuring Summit, the new supercomputer. He has enjoyed working with fellow RC Staff in this process and having input into the grant proposal and purchasing the new system. Many of his workdays are spent in meetings about purchasing and deploying the new supercomputer.

When he is not working on the Summit process, Anderson improves and maintains existing systems. He documents the way systems currently work and uses that research to make improvements and educate fellow team members. He tries, and evaluates, prototypes that may be better than the current system. The most important part of his work is his focus on best-practices, which helps him to fix problems in the current system and define new procedures to share with the team

Asked where he would travel if he could go anywhere in the world, Anderson replied, “I’ve already done a fair bit of traveling. At this point, I’m looking forward to settling down and staying where I am for a while; I’m exactly where I want to be!”
